West Ham have completed a £35.5m transfer of Italian striker, Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo.

Scamacca’s move comes after the 23 year-old Italian impressed with 16 goals in 36 Serie A appearances, although he failed to score in two Coppa Italia appearances as he made a total number of 38 appearances for Sassuolo last season.

West Ham will pay an initial £30.5m transfer fee followed by £5.5m in add-ons which takes the overall transfer fee to £35.5m, with Scamacca signing a five-year contract until June 2027 with option for one further year.

Speaking about his decision to move to West Ham, Scamacca said: “I am really excited to join West Ham,” having now achieved his “dream” to play for a Premier League club.

On why he decided to join the Hammers specifically, Scamacca added: “I feel like West Ham is the perfect team for me. They showed they really wanted me and when I spoke to the manager there was an instant understanding.

“I can’t wait to play and show the supporters what I can do in the West Ham shirt – I hope we will love each other.”

West Ham manager, David Moyes meanwhile is “delighted” to have finally been able “to add more strength to our attacking options” after having managed last season with only Michail Antonio as their senior striker.

Having progressed through AS Roma’s youth academy Scamacca moved to Jong PSV in the Netherlands’ Eerste Divisie in 2015, where he failed to score in three appearances across 2015-16 & 16-17 seasons before he returned to Italy with Sassuolo.

He however could only manage three appearances in his first season at Sassuolo which led to him enduring four loan spells in total at Cremonese, PEC Zwolle, Ascoli and Genoa, where he scored 26 goals in 88 appearances across all four loan clubs despite failing to score at PEC Zwolle.

Scamacca will wear the Number 7 shirt this season and could make his competitive debut for West Ham on Sunday 7 August, as the Hammers face a difficult home match against Manchester City in their opening match of 2022-23 Premier League season.
