1996: Just 7 pitches into the Cincinnati Reds-Montreal Expos Opening Day game, MLB umpire John McSherry suffered a heart attack, collapsing on the field and ultimately passing away. The players were shaken up so the game was postponed, prompting a gaffe of a statement by Reds owner Marge Schott, which would contribute to her eventual ousting
1973: Boston Celtics SF John Havlicek tied Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA playoff record by converting 24 FGM (for 54 points). Michael Jordan matched it during his 55-point game against Cleveland but it’s never been surpassed
1972: MLB players officially went on strike for the 1st time in the sport’s history which influenced future player strikes in baseball and other sports as well
